Pastoral Scene with Horse and Shepherds

Charming pastoral composition depicting figures resting in a landscape beside a horse. A standing rider turns toward two seated figures, while sheep gather in the foreground, reinforcing the rural setting. The background opens into a soft, expansive landscape with hills and trees, creating depth and a calm, atmospheric mood.

The warm, earthy palette and gentle lighting evoke a tranquil, late afternoon setting. The composition reflects the influence of 18th-century Dutch and German genre painting, particularly recalling the work of Philips Wouwerman and artists of his circle.

According to an old label on the reverse, the painting is described as an “original painting of the German Baroque school around 1750,” with a composition based on Philips Wouwerman and executed in the manner of Augustin Querfurt (1696–1761).

The reverse also bears a label of the Breslau-based court supplier Friedrich Kirschner, gilder and frame manufacturer, indicating a later framing or commercial provenance.
