“The Enraged Zubr” — Bach Dynasty Model, Kusinsky Cast 1905

The sculpture depicts a powerfully rendered zubr (European bison) in dynamic forward motion. The composition — with the torso turned slightly to the side, the hindquarters tensed, and a tree stump positioned behind the shoulder — corresponds to the classic model of the Bach family, attributed in the literature to both Roman Ivanovich Bach (1819–1903) and Robert Romanovich Bach (1859–1933). This motif, frequently referred to as “Разъярённый зубр” (“The Enraged Zubr”), is considered one of the most iconic animal sculptures of late 19th-century Russian foundry art.

On the underside, the sculpture bears the characteristic KUS.Z. marks of the Kusinsky Iron Foundry, including the circular stamp with the double-headed eagle emblem and two rectangular foundry marks. An additional numerical inscription indicates the year 1905, identifying the piece as an early cast from the period of the Russian Empire.

The work is executed in heavy metal cast and features a distinctive dark patina. The modeling, surface texture, and anatomical detailing exemplify the high technical standards of the Ural foundries during this era.
