The sculpture shown is a bronze depiction of a dramatic hunting scene in which a lion has overpowered its prey. The lion stands powerfully and tensely over an animal that has already been brought to the ground, preparing to deliver a fatal bite to the neck. Its posture appears dynamic and dominant: the muscular body is slightly inclined forward, the mane is rendered with fine detail, and the raised tail emphasizes the tension and energy of the moment. In contrast, the prey is modeled as soft and limp, further accentuating the lion’s superiority.

Stylistically, the sculpture belongs to the tradition of so-called “Animalier” art, which was particularly popular in 19th-century France. Artists of this movement specialized in realistic and often dramatic representations of animals, especially scenes of hunting and combat. Unfortunately, the design and the foundry of the sculpture are not known to us.
